While the fish itself is inherently kosher, its preparation is crucial. To be served as a kosher dish, it must be handled in a kosher kitchen, avoiding any cross-contamination with non-kosher items or utensils.
The principles for identifying a kosher fish are straightforward:
Fins: The fish must have fins.
Scales: It must have scales that can be easily removed without tearing the skin.
Is tilapia halal?
Yes, tilapia is considered halal for consumption by the majority of Muslims. Its permissibility is primarily due to it possessing scales, a key requirement for fish to be considered halal in most Islamic jurisprudence. For a fish to be fully compliant, other factors are also considered, ensuring the entire process aligns with Islamic principles.
To be certified halal, tilapia must adhere to the following:
